St. Martha school for girls was a grade/college prep./finishing school that took girls  from 13 to 21. The curriculum as well as the overall discipline could best be described as strict - Very Strict. Joyce was one of the oldest girls in the school at over twenty one years old. But she still wasn’t excused from having to follow the schools rule nor immune from getting her just deserves if she failed to obey them.

Seeing the *adult* woman made an example of served its purpose. The screams and pleas for mercy may have fallen on deaf ears of the Mother Superior as she continued to punish the girl until walking would be difficult, much less sitting down but it was certainly heard by the assembled student body.

Long before she was told she may rise, Joyce forgot about embarrassment. In fact every thought was driven from her head as only the pain existed.
