Have you ever owned a traditional Fair Isle sweater from #Scotland? I bought one in Scotland about two hundred years ago, and that gorgeous wool jumper lasted until my dog chewed it up a few years back.
Fair Isle (#OldNorse: Friðarey; #ScottishGaelic: Fara) is an island in #Shetland, in northern Scotland. #Norse settlers named it Fridarey - the island of peace - but this stepping stone in the sea was also vital in times of strife, when the Earls of Orkney and #viking warlords before them used it as a look-out post and for sending fire signals to and from Shetland. #FairIsle lies approximately halfway between mainland Shetland and #Orkney; it’s the most remote inhabited ( pop. 70) island in the UK. It is known for its bird observatory and a traditional style of knitting.
You can still get beautiful handcrafted and bespoke Fair Isle knitwear from Fair Isle crafters.
