When Robert and Simone had been at Roissy as Research Assistants to Father Antoine, Robert had often used Gillian, a young English girl.  He had not been cruel to her, and she had fallen in love with him, hoping he would deliver her from Roissy.  He had fond memories of her, but no particular interest.  She was just one of many girls he had had there.  He was himself shyly fond of Rebecca, but had hardly touched her.
