The Stairs that descended to the dungeons of Roissy were very old and uneven.  At parts the naked feet of the two girls Robert was leading became damp. 

Many feet had descended those stairs to torment and suffering.  Many did not survive to climb those stairs out of the horrid dungeons.  None of those who survived ascended unchanged.
