The Value of Field-Trips
The clips above were taken during the two class field-trips I went on last April 2015—one with an ichthyology class I was teaching, and another with an invertebrate taxonomy class.
One of the major benefits of field-trips is allowing students to observe creatures or phenomena as they are in their natural environment.Being able to see a living, breathing organism previously encountered only in a textbook or laptop gives one an increased appreciation of the subject-matter.
The second major benefit of field-trips is that field-trips allow students to experience things that they would not have experienced in a classroom. Out here, they are exposed to (at least some of) the conditions faced by researches in the field.
