Once I own a sword, what can I actually do with it? “Swords are usually purchased for one of two things, training or admiring. Every sword is different, and this one is distinctly yours. “If you’ve purchased a training sword, whether it’s a bokken, iaito or shinken, your intention should be to become familiar with its idiosyncrasies and personality. Use it safely and with proper guidance to facilitate your growing repertoire of techniques and understanding of combat. “If you’ve acquired an expensive [one] for the sole purpose of investment or art, admire it for its beauty and share the experience and information with others. Refrain from damaging it through improper usage. “Whether you’ve purchased a training sword or an object d’art, respect it. How you handle it reflects your sincerity and commitment to your education.”
