“I’m a mystic. I’ve been studying mysticism for 40 years.”
“How would you sum up everything you’ve learned?”
“It’s the simplicity of life. It’s not the adjectives, the entertaining thoughts, the grand ideas. If you want me to give you a piece of advice, I’ll tell you this: Follow your heart. When you wake up in the morning, say a prayer. Let it soak for a minute and become one with you. Then follow it throughout the day.”
“Do you have to pray to a specific deity?”
“Whatever suits you. If God has never failed you, pray to God. If a saint has never failed you, pray to a saint. If you trust in something else, pray to something else. Follow your heart. Up here, in the head, is all the fancy stuff—the ego, the elaborate concepts, the adjectives, the illusions. They will fail you. Your heart will never fail you. It’s the simple things. We often ignore them because they seem too elementary. We go after the fancy things. It took me 40 years to learn that.”
