Here are my notes for the first episode of Squid Game. A focus was placed on the first scene in Episode 1, where Gi-hoon provides a description for playing The Squid Game. I found Netflix’s English subtitles/translations in this scene to be very helpful as you can see above.

It’s so interesting to see how certain phrases have been naturalised to an English speaker’s tone. ‘Be eligible’ may be more natural-sounding in Korean, but ‘be given freedom’ is a more common way of phrasing this in English and sounds better to English speakers.
