I debuted Classic Fairy Tales by Angelic Pretty this past week at A-Kon! It’s such a gorgeous dress – I just about cried when I first got it in the mail – and even though a lot of key accessories I ordered for this coord didn’t arrive in time (Rest in Post Office kawaii hat) I still felt absolutely incredible all weekend.

Ladies, gents, everyone: let me take a moment to be cheesy. I’m a veterinary nurse and I do a lot of work rescuing animals, so 95% of my life I feel sweaty, exhausted and the furthest thing from beautiful that ever existed. I’m the person that shuffles around the grocery store hoping nobody notices me. I never wear makeup and my day-to-day clothes are either dirty scrubs or pajamas.

But when I put on my dresses, so carefully selected and intricately made, I feel like a million bucks. It isn’t just a matter of feeling pretty under all the makeup and wig and stuff, it’s that the clothes themselves are a statement. A challenge, almost. Rather than a plain Target t-shirt and some jeans I’m wearing something out there and weird, why? Because I love it. I love the way my petticoat bounces when I walk and I love the beautiful designs on my dress and I love the proud click my heels make when I walk, and if the whole world thought it was hideous it wouldn’t matter, because I don’t.

For once I can walk around and feel joy when someone looks at me, whether it’s with a grimace or a smile. I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve. That’s why I feel beautiful in lolita.
