It all boils down to what kind of party you are talking about:

El PARTIDO político - The political PARTY.

La FIESTA de Juan - Juan’s PARTY.

On a side note: Partido can also mean, game or match, por ejemplo:
El PARTIDO empieza a las cuatro - the GAME/MATCH starts at 4:00.
