An experiment doing concept-work on an inner chamber of the FossilGhoul creating meteor-being Apothis. The core of Apothis remains active even when trapped in Earth orbit, and within its myriad passages and chambers it pulses and shifts, impermanent yet ageless, awaiting its chance to return to its grim work.

I imagine Apothis as having an uncomfortable mix of plant, fungus, animal and mineral traits, almost like it is trying to be one or all of them and is failing in the imitation. Apothis is always “wrong”, like when you reach for something that shouldn’t be wet, but it is. It shouldn’t “be” in our kind of reality, and having it not fit inot an easily recognizable category of “thing’ helps communicate that.

In the same way, Apothis is both a single organism and a biosphere, from the Fossil Ghouls, who are made from the evil ‘soul’s that Apothis stored like fat on previous harvests, to whole ecosystems of temporary pseudo-life that boil to the surface only to be later devoured back into the mass. 

These traits carry down to the Fossil Ghouls, the most powerful of which can incarnate lesser creatures like Extinxion’s bone drones or LaBrea’s speed demons.
