5 AM. My alarm goes off, I turn on the lamp and grab the notebook next to my bed to finish writing what I fell asleep on last night. My words are jagged and harsh, no trace of the softness that usually coats them. Frustration and anxiety have me assuming the worst. Memories and grudges have me sore with old injuries. Insecurity has me desperate and reaching. I don’t like the shapes my emotions are creating on the page. Still, I continue to write because I need to learn from this version of myself.

We all need spaces where we can be raw, uncut and unapologetically honest. We often meet this need with resistance because we are used to hiding pieces of ourselves. We might only want to acknowledge the parts of us that we think people like because our softest and hardest parts don’t make us feel safe.
