Great Fire of 1911, Bangor, Maine.
On April 30, 1911, a small fire in a shed on Broad Street was spread by high winds to engulf most of Downtown Bangor. Aided by a light rain that developed that night, the fire was brought under control by the next morning, May 1.
285 homes, 100 businesses, and 6 churches were destroyed, along with the Post office, Public Library, Customs House and much of the Bangor Historical Society’s collection.
