Instead of obeying, Inej pressed the stake in a little further. “I have no business with you, Kaz Brekker.” She enjoyed the brief flash of surprise on his face. She had done her research too. “And our hearts are nothing alike. I know why you killed the Menagerie’s clients. For profit. You don’t care about slavery, you care about selling that fake blood of yours.”

“Did that disappoint you?” Kaz asked, and maddeningly, Inej couldn’t tell if this was mockery or curiosity. “Did you think I might be some kind of hero?”

“No,” she said, teeth gritted. “I always knew what you are.”
