The 102-story, 1250-foot tall skyscraper was dedicated by former New York State Governor Alfred Smith and current Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who after the ribbon cutting ceremony signaled President Herbert Hoover in the White House to flip a switch, instantly illuminating the world’s tallest building. It would hold the title of world’s tallest for forty years until the opening of the World Trade Center in 1971.
