leonardsara:
#this moment right here is so little but so important #leonard snart doesn’t get into physical contact with anyone ever #and if he does it normally doesn’t end well #like in the early episodes when ray grabbed his arm to stop him from stealing stuff #leonard’s literal reaction was to punch him in the face for it #the one time sara grabbed his arm for warmth #which was a necessary physical contact in order to stay conscious #the few occassions in which leonard touched mick (or knocked him out) to stop him from attacking other people #or when mick and leonard ‘talked it out’ by punching each other a few times #leonard snart doesn’t like physical contact #because physical contact in the past - and also very often in the present - meant nothing but violence and abuse #and usually leonard is shown to keep a distance between the people he works with and himself #which has been shown throughout the season by adding a lot of space whenever leonard is in a shot with other people #and then this woman comes along and touches him for no particular reason other than the fact that she wants to touch his hand #and you would think he wouldn’t like it #that being touched so lightly isn’t leonard’s thing #BUT HE SMILES AT HER #SHE’S BEING PLAYFUL #AND HE APPRECIATES IT #AND LITERALLY SMILES AT HER #AND SHE SMILES BACK #KEEPING THE PLAYFULNESS #AND IF YOU DON’T THINK THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOMENT EVER #YOU’RE GODDAMN WRONG
It’s also a very small thing and you can barely even see it in the scene, but he actually opens his hand a little more and turns it for her. The motion is very subtle, but it’s there. Which shows both acceptance and allowance/welcoming of the contact.
He’s nonverbally giving Sara permission to touch him.
Think about it. The normal reaction if someone reaches out for something in/on your hand if you don’t want that contact is to clench your fist, to literally close up, just like with overall body language. Body language that he has exhibited multiple times when he crosses his arms and practically folds in on himself, tense and ready to move if he needs to do so.
But here he is with relaxed posture—a thoughtful and even somewhat amused expression on his face as he watches her—and he opens his hand ever so slightly to allow her to reach the ring (which also means allowing contact).
What’s even more profound, consider that she is a highly trained assassin who he’s just pulled the cold gun on earlier in the episode (it doesn’t matter that she knew he wouldn’t pull the trigger; that he did it could have been reason enough, depending on the person). Yet he’s obviously not concerned about any reprisals, about her ‘teaching him a lesson,’ as his father no doubt would have done had he pulled the cold gun on him as a threat. Snart clearly doesn’t have his guard up, and he isn’t afraid of her or of whatever contact she might intend to initiate here.
I agree with @leonardsara. This is such a small moment but it’s also one that’s so extremely important. It shows how far the two of them have progressed.
Have fun with this.
