I’ve been delving deep into the world of the incredible Trina Schart Hyman, an illustrator I’ve been obsessed with from childhood. Feels so good to revisit the artists that made me excited about illustration from the very beginning. I found an old copy of her biography and the parallels in her story gave me chills and had me crying tears of joy. Her very first break came from Astrid Lindgren herself! I can’t even imagine. Then she was the art director for Cricket magazine (these pictured are copies from the 1970’s) and she illustrated 150 or so books. And won a Caldecott. No big thing. I’m so sad she’s not alive today. I would write her a big gushy fan letter.
