A figure drawing in my sketchbook from last week. My general process for sketches like this is three steps: I’ll start super-loose with pencil, gradually building up a sense of form and weight. Then I’ll go in with the ballpoint pen and put in the linework. Hopefully if my pencil drawing is well constructed, I can keep my pen drawing somewhat loose and free. Finally I go in with some watered down ink and build up the shadow and depth. When it works, I find the pen and ink give a really nice feel. But it’s the initial pencil construction which is the make-or-break stage.
