Some very interesting images as assembled by this person, showing Shigeru Mizuki taking inspiration for his designs in GeGeGe no Kitaro from mid-90’s artists. There are more examples through their twitter of Mizuki drawing from all kinds of sources in designing yokai. From what I could tell, these discoveries were met with mixed reactions, from accusing Mizuki of “ripping off” others, to just being intrigued by his influences. If there’s any writing done on this in English, do let me know. Reading Japanese via Google Translate is a bit of an obstacle to gathering info… Fascinating nonetheless!
