A Vast/Buried Domain
+++|+++|+++
The Vast and The Buried are exact opposites, not just in theme but in meaning as well. It was difficult to think of a way for a domain to feed both but also fun. The Vast carries motifs of wide, open spaces while The Buried holds tight, closed spaces. The Vast feeds off a fear of being infinitesimal while The Buried feeds off of being at the flattening pressure of the center.
I think a domain for the two would be being stuck at the bottom of a huge body of water. To escape the endless blank of blue and nothing You dig and crawl and burrow into the bottom until your lungs are arid and cracking and your arms are pinned to your side. To escape the pinning tightness you kick and squirm and float until you can’t see the ground anymore–until you can’t see anything anymore–your limbs feel loose from your body and you can’t feel the difference between your skin, your blood, and the gaping water all around you. The breath is always a losing fight. All you can think of is how no one is coming to save you, you’re not worth saving. All you can think of is how it’s all on you to keep going, to find a way out, to save your life.
This place focuses especially on hopelessness; one seemingly bright light out continues to reveal itself as only more crushing, more pain, more suffering, until the torture you’d endured before seems to seem more bearable… then it seems good… until finally you become determined it must be the solution. You claw and kill and sacrifice your way there only to find the same fate in a different way. No matter how many times you go back or forth, your memory twists and warps, never letting you accept and lose hope, keeping you firmly stuck in the despair of your own insignificance and under burden of your very existence.
