In Hazy Maze Cave in Super Mario 64, it is possible to exploit the fact that the cave has no ceilings (as these were not modeled to save polygons, and would not have been visible against the black background of the cave anyway) to perform a triple jump off a ! Block in the rolling rocks room to jump over the wall and land in the underground lake; a trick widely used in speedruns of the game.
However, with wrong positioning it is possible to cause Mario to die during this trick. The underground lake is directly above the entrance room of the course, which has bottomless pits that Scuttlebugs jump out of. The bottomless pits are not loaded until Mario touches their hitboxes, so that they are invisible while Mario is falling into the lake. If Mario touches the invisible pit, it will immediately load around Mario and kill him, appearing as though he was instantly transported into a black void.
