“We found the voice for Professor Ratigan while watching the 1950 movie Champagne for Caesar. We had originally decided to view the film since it starred Ronald Colman, and we were considering his voice as a possible model for Ratigan’s. Vincent Price played one of those bigger-than-life cads, and, as soon as he came on, we all said, ‘That’s our guy.’” - Mark Henn and Glen Keane
“If anyone but Disney had asked me [to audition], I would have been offended.” - Vincent Price
So, I was compelled to watch Champagne for Caesar after seeing this post and it should be known:
A) This movie is quite funny and I recommend it.
and
B) Vincent Price utterly steals the show. No question. He poured his whole little bisexual soul into this role and he fuckin’ killsit.
The gifs above don’t do that scene justice (imho) because he’s so camp it really must be viewed in motion. Please see below:
Scene in question is the first minute or so and well worth your time. I also STRONGLY recommend skipping to 8:52 to hear his unbelievably flawless delivery of this line:
“Let me explain something to you, my dear. If we take Mr. Bottomley off the show, the people who listen to our show wouldn’t like the idea. If they don’t like the idea, they won’t listen to our show. If they don’t listen to our show, our sales will drop to nothing and we will lose MONEY!”
@popcorn4dinner I remember back when I made this gif set, I too thought the campy delivery of the line got lost in translation . Though I never watched more of the film aside from that scene, I’m happy to hear the rest of it is just as delightfully over-the-top, especially Vincent Price ^^. Thanks for sharing!
