On January 7, 2010, the captive-born female Takara gave birth to her third calf at SeaWorld San Antonio; a female named Sakari sired by the Icelandic male Tilikum.
Soon after her birth, Sakari was able to meet her half-sister Unna, as well as her uncle Keet and appears to be growing and learning well.
According to former trainer John Hargrove, Sakari, despite being so young, displayed very self-destructive stereotypical behaviors. Sakari, like some other whales, would engage in “head-banging”, in which an animal would repeatedly bang it’s head against the concrete floor or wall.
“She would go down and hit her head on the bottom of the pool, over and over to the point where her jaw would be bloody and bruised.” Hargrove stated. He went on to say that the damage to Sakari’s jaw was so bad at one point that she stopped eating, because it was too painful for her to open her mouth.
Today, Sakari is 5 years old and remained at the Texas park with her half-siblings and mother.
