“There is no need to stand longer, girls”, she said. “One of the boys has volunteered to take punishment in your place. He will receive 3 strokes or the cane for each of you, 6 strokes altogether. So drop your hands, go out and enjoy the beautiful summer day.”

“Which one of the boys volunteered? Was it Mark?”, Diane asked.

“You are right. It was Mark. He believes that girls should never be punished for anything. And I happen to agree with him.”

“And I agree too. It ought to be a law!”, giggled Diane. Miss Graham and the other girl giggled with her as they filed out to enjoy the rest of the day.
