We’ve been in the process of learning the zombies album live. Here’s a clip from the chorus of love and great building in case any of you piano players are bored and want to learn it with us.

I have done my best to keep my politics and my platform as an entertainer separate. Honestly, it’s something I struggle with daily, but I hold that line out of respect for my fans and out of disgust for the state of American politics. I believe that today’s hyper-politicized world is a serious distortion of reality. I believe that neighbors who disagree with one another have the capacity to find common ground and regularly do. I believe the politicians we elect to represent us and the diversity of our opinions and lifestyles, are failing us by not seeking that common ground. I’ve chosen to stay publicly apolitical because there are few spaces left that have not been politicized. I have immense respect for those who use their platforms to rally people to that which they believe is right and true. Still, I feel in this climate, my greatest contribution could be to remind people as they stand side by side in a live music venue that we are not as different as our televisions and our political leaders would like us to believe. With this in mind I would appreciate it if politicians and representatives of political parties would refrain from the public use of my music as KellyAnne Conway and the GOP did today at their CPAC convention. My music is about uniting people through our common experience and is not intended as hype tracks for political dog and pony shows.

Thrilled to announce I’ll be joining Billy Joel at his SOLD OUT show in Atlanta on April 28th

Thrilled to announce I’ll be joining Billy Joel at his SOLD OUT show in Atlanta on April 28th at SunTrust Park.

Dallas fans, this was a tough decision but I made it knowing we were able to move the previously scheduled April 28th show. We will be back with Zombies In America plus special guests and I promise to make our rescheduled date on July 23rd at the House of Blues very special. If you purchased tickets previously, they will still be honored for the new date. Otherwise, if you can’t make it out in July, you can get a refund at the point of purchase. If you still need tickets to the show, they will go on sale again February 24th at 10am CST

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Zombies on Broadway was released. The support for the album on the road, at radio and in the kindness shown by my fans was more than I could have hoped for. A huge highlight of working the album was the time the band and I spent in Japan. As I begin the transition from Zombies into the wilderness of whatever comes next I want to share one last video from this collection of songs. My cousin, friend and collaborator, Cooper Karl, joined the band and I on our Japanese tour and in the process collected the footage for this film. Selfishly, I’m so grateful to have this piece so I can look back at the beauty and chaos of those shows and nights out in Tokyo and Osaka. Still it’s my hope that those of you who made it to shows during our year long Zombies adventure will feel the same nostalgia I feel when watching these frames set to Shot out of a Cannon. Thanks to Cooper and his team for putting this together and to Michael McQuilcan for the graphics woven into this cool tapestry. Enjoy.

I am both pleased and terrified to announce The Pen and the Piano Tour. An acoustic evening with me and my friends, Allen Stone, Zac Clark and bob oxblood (formerly of Jack’s Mannequin). I’m pleased because I’ll be boarding a bus with three dear friends, all gifted singer/songwriters to play 6 weeks of intimate shows around the United States. I’m terrified because I want this to be a totally unique concert experience, and the truth is I’m not exactly sure what that looks like yet. In my mind’s eye it’s equal parts VH1 StorytellersandMr. Roger’s Neighborhood. A stage where I can perform and tell stories about the songs I’ve written over the last two decades and where my friends can perform and tell their stories too. It will be weird and fun and honest. An exploration of the moments in between, that make a song worth writing.

I’m excited to announce the 8th Annual Dear Jack Benefit will take place in Denver Colorado at the Ogden Theatre. This year’s show will be packed with music and moving stories about the adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors we work with day in and day out at Dear Jack. The music program will include the final performance of the Zombies in America Tour and a cast of special guest performers making appearances throughout the night. My dear friend and incomparable talent, Allen Stone, will be joining us for an acoustic set. Legendary SoCo and Jack’s Mannequin guitarist Bobby “raw” Anderson AKA Oxblood will be performing a set of new music as well as joining the Wilderness onstage to supply some extra firepower. Bandmate and collaborator Zac Clark will also be performing a set of songs from his upcoming solo record, which is unreal. If that weren’t enough we have Something Corporate drummer Brian Ireland set take over drumming duties for a few tunes. Please join us for what is bound to be a memorable and beautiful evening in honor of the Dear Jack mission to make life easier for those facing adolescent and young adult cancer.

Pre-sale starts tomorrow at 10am MDT, get your tickets then.

General on sale starts Friday at 10am MDT.

Several weeks ago I got a call from my wife informing me about an upcoming solar eclipse. It would be the first time since 1918 that such an event had taken place across the U.S. and she wanted to experience it with my daughter and I. I obliged, but my curiosity was piqued. In our relationship I’ve always been the champion of inconvenient travel plans and the news of oversold hotels and apocalyptic traffic jams seemed a stretch, even for me. Still, she leaned into the planning and it became a mission for our family to find ourselves in the path of totality. It wasn’t until I returned home last week, scattershot and depleted from a string of fly dates, that it occurred to me our travels would include today, the anniversary of one of the strangest moments in my life. A day, when through a feat of scientific muscle, I was transfused with my sister’s bone marrow. It was on this day twelve years ago that I was 115 pounds, bald as the day I was born and ready to be born again. I was a patient then and now they call me a survivor.

Admittedly, this anniversary and the days surrounding it have been fraught with angst and long walks through metaphorical mine fields. From year to year I’ve found myself boarded up emotionally, sweating out benders in rented rooms and never being the wiser that the landmark was looming until it was far too late. Cancer and it’s aftermath has lead my wife and I through so many false starts. You think it’s over and then it’s back in it’s myriad ghost forms, challenging you to stand up to it again and again. You feel shame and anger, forgiveness and grace so many times you wonder if it’s the disease or just your human failings. Most likely it is both, but It’s hard to unwind the two and I’m not sure I ever will. What I do know is that this year feels different. Standing in a field with a group of strangers and the two people who know me best, watching the light change as the earth, sun and moon rotated briefly into perfect alignment, I found myself weeping with gratitude for the gift of my rebirth. Instead of running from myself I was slow dancing with my tribe beneath the most unusual sky.

It is for the caretakers who standby ready to move mountains that I dedicate this birthday. It is for the feeling of powerlessness that persists when the one you love most is so full of sickness that all you can do is hope and wait. It is for the aftermath that no one prepares you for and the beauty that comes from rebuilding your life around the shadow of a sickness retreating. It is for my wife who artfully navigated me into the path of an eclipse on a week when I am so regularly in the path of a steamroller. It is for the fact that so few of us do this alone, yet those who shoulder the burden are so rarely acknowledged for their contribution. If there is any gift I could receive on this most bizarre of birthdays, it would be for those of you who know a patient or a survivor to reach out to their spouses, partners, parents, families, friends and advocates and let them know how much you appreciate their sacrifice. Now that would be a birthday present.

Chasing asphalt from Glasgow to Birmingham. It was hard to leave. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Scotland in the sun and it was just what I needed. There is something about a city in those first warm days of the year. The shedding of cold weather clothes, pale skin washed in rays cut through layers of tired ozone. The collective gratitude gasp of countless commuted prison sentences. If I could chase this feeling I would. I would give it all up to worship with the masses in lands of forgotten light, reborn. Today I was a native. My history, if only for the afternoon, forgotten. I buried my accent and my origin so I too could feel that warmth around me like the embrace of a welcome stranger. In the end though, I am the stranger. When I travel this far from home I carry an ache with me. A drifter melancholy shot full of curiosity and hope for the future. When the chord is cut, there is so much to collect in the ether, but the return is always riding with me. Home is both the shadow and the light from which the shadow is born. What my eyes see with my heart so full of longing is the outline of a path. The road from who I am to who I will be. I do not travel with the map, I travel in search of it.
