Van Looij made this study of a meadow filled with clover for a painting of a girl, Aaltje, lying in the grass. This close-up submerges us in nature and allows us – like Aaltje – to directly enjoy the flowers. Van Looij would continue on this path, making flowers his main subject, such as in Summer Luxuriance, the painting on the opposite wall.

Reinoud III of Brederode is portrayed here as a high official – with the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, wearing expensive clothes and holding a richly decorated dagger in his hand. The door and window of this entrance hall in an Amsterdam canal house are wide open. Daylight falls on a young woman receiving a letter. Pieter de Hooch cleverly linked the interior with the exterior. Our gaze moves past the little dog to the canal, on the opposite side of which two men converse and a woman at a window looks towards us. The gateway seen through the right window affords an even more distant view.

The Princess of Orange Visiting the Work-shop of Bartholomeus van der Helst,Museum of the Netherlands
Mary Stuart, the widow of Stadtholder William II, looks at her portrait in the workshop of the 17th-century painter Van der Helst. In the background is his unfinished monumental painting Banquet of the Civic Guard, in which the militiamen celebrate the end of the Eighty Years’ War. For his likeness of the princess, Scholten relied on an existing portrait, also by Van der Helst. Scholten thus demonstrated his knowledge of both 17th-century Dutch painting and national history.
