Sitting under the Arbour, Hugo Birger, 19??,Nationalmuseum, SWE

Hugo Birger’s women in bustles are emblematic of the sophisticated world that awaited the Swedish artists in Paris in the 1880s. In Sweden, bourgeois respectability demanded that dresses have long sleeves, preferably black, while the women in Paris wore bright satin dresses adorned with trails, frills, lace and flounces. Dainty bergère hats with bows and satin shoes completed their stylish creations inspired by 18th century fashions.

Judith with the Head of Holofernes, Bernardo Cavallino,Nationalmuseum, SWE

This biblical story is set in the time of the Babylonian siege of Judea. It speaks of Divine power acting through one of its creatures, the young widow Judith, who liberates her people by beheading Holofernes, King Nebuchadnezzar’s general. Judith is portrayed as a vulnerable young woman standing alone in the murdered general’s tent. Holding the still bloody sword, she places one hand gently on the general’s severed head. Her face expresses both horror and melancholy.

Portrait of a Man Wearing a Black Beret, Dosso Dossi,Nationalmuseum, SWE

This type of portrait can be linked to the aristocratic ideal that emerged early in the 16th century in Renaissance Italy. It was an ideal described in Baldassare Castiglione’s famous book The Courtier (1528) and captured in images by Italian painters such as Raphael, Titian or, as here, Dosso Dossi. In this painting the subject, in a characteristic beard, elegant costume and hat, leans at an open window overlooking a landscape. The work was part of the art collection of the abdicated Queen Christina in Rome.
