coming from Ireland: we underestimate the grandmas.
in Ireland, abortion was completely illegal until 2018, when a referendum (not the first) legalised it. I flew home to Ireland to vote, as did many. we were worried. the major parties only came out in favour of abortion very late in the campaign, when they decided it would probablyswing that way. even then, the opposition didn’t come out one way or another at all. the referendum we had on divorce in the 90s passed by practically 1%, and other referenda have a similar history. but going into the day I was optimistic.
then I went down to vote and I panicked. I live in a village with lots of old people and by god were the old people out to vote. dozens upon dozens of old ladies in particular. and my mum and I were so worried casting our yes vote that the older generation would take this from us, and there wouldn’t be another referendum for at least a generation.
the results came back, and not only did it pass - my constituency was one of the most solid yes-es in the country. the old ladies came out in force to vote for their rights and make sure they weren’t stolen from them like they had been 30 years before.
don’t underestimate the grandmas. they’ve been here longer than you, dealt with more than you. you think you’re sick of this shit? they will go down fighting.
I really miss the like 2015 era of the internet where every websites Main Fucking Goal wasn’t to be as difficult to navigate as possible and when they didn’t constantly get rid of old features to force people to use different ineffectual one’s every time I revisit a website I haven’t in a while it’s not only unrecognizeable but is so inefficient compared to what it used to do that it is physically painful to me and it pisses me off so much like oh my god you do not need to update things constantly! A website could stay exactly the same for 30 years for all I care as long as it’s not broken like jesus fucking christ can we just wipe out capitalism and the #progress grind please I feel like an old person everything feels foreign and confusing and I’m literally 21 years old i am actually losing it
