Just a brief pause.

Not hesitation, but just a moment to to truly open her mind to what was about to happen, what she was about to do, and experience. A second to ascertain that it was real, to let it fill her completely, to breathe only for the here, now and for her. The moment had been so long in the making that she didn’t want to lose a second of the experience.

She would never have dreamed of this moment with her raven-haired acquaintance But she could think of nothing else. At first, she’d only seen her from a distance, and couldn’t explain why. Out of all the faces that she saw in the day, it was hers that stayed. Her eyes that she was lost in. Her memory that commanded her thoughts, until the why didn’t matter. All that mattered was her.

Her glance would send butterflies through her stomach, and her laughter would bring out the sun on the darkest of days. All she wanted was to see her smile, to make her happy, to do anything for Her. All was right in the world when She was pleased, and that was worth anything to her. It wasn’t that She was so smart, or clever, or could make her laugh, or that She was so beautiful, and she wished she could be more like Her. It was because She could also make her sorry, could make her cry and dry the tears with the right words. Because She knew. She’d always be there, hard when it was necessary, soft when She could.

The idea of lesbianism never crossed her mind; or more to the point, it didn’t matter. The place her heart belonged was in Her hands, where she was loved for herself and there was no room for fear, doubt or loneliness. Anything else just didn’t matter.

But one day she discovered she could make Her more than smile, more than just content but…ecstatic. The thought filled her with strange ideas and confusing feelings, but as usual, She put it all together. Because She always knew.

And now she was just seconds away. What would happen next might be a bit uncertain to her, but she could be absolutely sure that She would be there for her, that She would know what had to be done, and that this was for Her. There was so much she wanted to say, but there were no words, just that intense, nameless feeling. It washed over her and as she let herself drown in it, she knew what to say.

For the first time it rolled off her tongue,
