Shiro stepped across the room as the demon’s eyes raked over him with silent glee. He stared him down with a fierce hunger; ancient and eternal. Skull grinning under empty voids, fangs slavering with a starvation he’d never satisfy, barely more of a beast than his hellhound. But he was infinitely more intelligent. He had eons on his side and the frail mortality of their vessels had been his playthings a thousand times before. He remembered them no more than the wolf remembered last year’s frightened rabbit, but the blood pulse was still burned onto his tongue and the lessons piled up into a cunning that even angels preferred not to tempt. Akira has waited thousands of years for an opportunity like this. He was brash and raw, but he was also dangerously patient. He made no move to rise as he waited for Shiro to close the space between them.

It seemed wrong, knowing the history of their vessels. A twisted perversion of something they’d never know. A deal made to save a life only to lose itself and a life given up to serve a cause in lieu of an eternity of emptiness. And yet despite the sly curve of his antithesis’ lips there was something in his eyes that didn’t match it.There were powers that existed outside even their realms and he pondered on the chance that despite their own grande schemes, they were just as much a puppet to something even more impossibly ancient. It was that thought that fed his curiosity and tipped his conviction in the demon’s favour.

Besides, he had made a bargain and he always kept his word.

There was a flurry in the dark room and Keith stepped out of the blackness before him, dripping void from the spaces between stars as his eyes gleamed crimson. There was a flash of perfect teeth and the faint hint of cigarettes as he pressed his hands to Shiro’s chest.

“You came,” he purred, though the words carried a faint hint of surprise as though the deal seemed too good to be true even for the Master of the Crossroads.

“Did you doubt my words?”

A moment of silence, or perhaps an eternity. They stood still in time, contemplating each other like wolves circling the kill, searching for something that language could not define.

“Show me your wings.” Keith demanded.

“That was not part of the deal.” Shiro reminded, knowing well that the demon always remembered his bargains. “And it could erase you.”

“It wasn’t a request.” came the insistent reply. His eagerness tasted like a thousand empty winters just before the promise of spring. Bones and broken ground giving way to the first sprout of life. Shiro knew arguing with him would only waste time and delay the inevitable.

He manifests only a single pair to start. Feathers made of impossibility fill the room around him, their sheer presence making the space around them feel cramped.The sudden light flares like a second sun and Keith’s eyes widened with unadulterated awe.

The demon sucked in a painful breath as his ribs ached and fire danced on his skin. Slender fingers cast out, dredging the holy seas of the archangel’s pinions. Their essences collide and he drowns in a warmth that reaches so much more intimately than any fire. The response was instantaneous, sending Shiro shivering beneath him, uttering a sound that stirred their vessels and sent their hearts racing.

Keith grinned as an event horizon of endless hunger split open inside his chest cavity. This was the point of no return.

He would not be the only one who burned tonight…
