Although plastic straws make up only a small percentage of plastic pollution in the ocean (fishing nets make up the most!), the hype around plastic straws has been effective in getting the public to care about plastic pollution in the wider sense.

It’s been great seeing chains switch to paper or biodegradable straws, although obviously the best option is always reusables. However, I have seen some people advocating for a complete straw ban which I have learnt may effect the disabled community. Straws are sometimes necessary so that people with certain disabilities can drink!

We have to be mindful about advocating for eco-friendly solutions, whilst ensuring that accessibility isn’t reduced. Sustainability is about people too. ❤
