I always warm up before an illustration session to get my head and hands in the game. I begin with these sorts of abstract scribbles then move to quick sketches of my current subject. The scribbling is my favorite, though- I love the free flow of line and shape across the page as I experiment. That meditative doodling relaxes me, putting me into a mindset conducive to the serious creative work of scientific illustration.
