All the Plant Shows, part two

Plant podcasts are big these days, or at least that’s what it seems, which is why this has turned into a multi-part post (see part one). While in the process of compiling a list of plant podcasts that I’ve become aware of, I keep stumbling onto more. Which is great! It’s a trend that I hope continues. As it continues, I will go on compiling them here until we have ourselves a list of All the…

All the Plant Shows, part one

Podcasts are among the most accessible and powerful mediums through which we can tell and hear the stories of plants. The popularity of podcasts is evidence that if we want to share our love of plants with the world and get others to love them too, we have to be using podcasts to do it. They are essential tools in the communication of plant science and, when used effectively, they may even help…

A square flower?! This Datura discolor (desert datura) made a square flower about a week ago @btarboretum. Now the plant is producing fruits. I wonder what caused this flower to develop so unusually.

Found a gorgeous Pinus coulteri (big cone pine) cone today- this will be excellent subject matter for the upcoming nature journaling workshop that Marty Purdy and I will be teaching here @rsabg on March 14th. I’m really looking forward to it- there’s already a ton of blooming and buzzing activity going on in the garden to provide us plenty of excellent subject matter. The workshop will be tons of fun! Link to sign up for our workshop and other great classes at that garden here and on my profile: https://www.rsabg.org/events-programs/classes #Pinus #Pinaceae #pine #pinecone #nativeplants #botany #botanize #plants #nature #art #science #scientificillustration #botanicalillustration #illustration #plantart #sketch #naturejournal #journal #naturejournaling #rsabg #garden #workshop #events (at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9GAq4iA2gH/?igshid=f5ag925yp428

A few weeks ago, I was lucky to take a short trip to Encinitas and squeeze a beach visit in (for the first time since moving to SoCal ). I’m looking forward to learning more about the vast variety of biomes in my (relatively) new CA residence, and coastal environments are especially interesting. Plants who make their homes on beaches fascinate me…it seems such a harsh life full of salt, wind, and changing tides. Considering the high levels of  human activity as well as natural disturbance, it’s no surprise that the two prominent (non-grass) species who stood out to me are non-natives: an Aizoaceae sprawling across the substrate and a cheerful Brassicaceae sticking up here and there. The Aizoaceae (the Vygie or ice plant family) is probably a hybrid in the genus Carpobrotus while the Brassicaceae (mustard family) is probably Cakile maritima, native to Europe. I wonder what natives they might be crowding out? #Carpobrotus #Aizoaceae #Cakile #Brassicaceae #invasiveplants #nonnativeplants #weeds #california #southerncalifornia #SoCal #botany #botanize #plants #beach #ecology (at Moonlight Beach)

I think you’re Fab-aceae!
Last week, I had the great pleasure of creating a couple of pieces for Plant Love Stories! Fabaceae is one of my favorite plant families, so I knew I had to dedicate a valentine to a fab Fab. What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with plants and animals you love like lupines and bumblebees?

I always warm up before an illustration session to get my head and hands in the game. I begin with these sorts of abstract scribbles then move to quick sketches of my current subject. The scribbling is my favorite, though- I love the free flow of line and shape across the page as I experiment. That meditative doodling relaxes me, putting me into a mindset conducive to the serious creative work of scientific illustration.

Working at a place like @rsabg, I’m lucky enough to meet (and be a small part of preserving) endangered plants like Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia (Baja birdbrush). The Flora of North America has this to say about these stately native shrubs: “Ornithostaphylos oppositifolia is known in the United States from a single mesa and adjacent slopes in the Tijuana Hills just north of the international border with Mexico in San Diego County. Only 103 individuals have been located on the United States side of the border, and the species is listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act. The population has been declining due to habitat fragmentation by roads and trails and disturbance caused by illegal border crossings and Border Patrol activities, including ‘brush’ clearing. Recently, the extensive disturbance caused by the building of a double border fence has dramatically affected the population, and its long-term survival is uncertain.” Plants don’t recognize our borders, but our activities along them have a huge impact on plants and their habitat. O. oppositifolia were here long before we drew those lines across the land. Is keeping specific groups of people on specific sides of arbitrary boundaries worth the harm we do in the process?

Fun at work this week: filing Brassicaceae into the collection and sowing Lupine seeds! I love it when I get to work in both the “dead” collection and the living collection. The herbarium collection is approaching 1.3 million dried and pressed specimens. I don’t know how many perennials are accessioned into the living collection. Many hundreds, I imagine! I’m hoping to learn more about how the living collection is managed in the coming months.

Fun at work last week creating Romneya coulteri (Matilija poppy) flower arrangements with paper flowers and live foliage. These were used as center pieces for a celebration of our many fantastic volunteers here at @rsabg - this place would be impoverished without them! The stunning beauty of Romneya coulteri is a perfect reflection of the vibrancy the volunteers bring to their work. If you are able, I highly recommend volunteering at your local botanic garden or arboretum! #RomneyaCoulteri #Romneya #Matilijapoppy #poppies #poppy #flowers #wildflowers #crafts #papercrafts #paperflowers #flowerarrangments #botanicalgarden #botanicgarden #rsabg #volunteer #celebrate #botany #botanize #plants #nativeplants (at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden)

The bean pod of Pterocarpus angolensis is a fascinating one! The genus refers to the distinctive pods: “pter” for wing and “carpus” for fruit. Called kiaat in Afrikaans, this tree is native to southern and eastern Africa and is widely valued for it’s wood, medicinal use and, I imagine, it’s beauty. This particular specimen was collected in Mpumalanga, South Africa. What a fun fruit to sketch!

More calla lilies today, which aren’t lilies at all- they’re aroids! Members of the Araceae family are commonly known as aroids or arums and have a spadix inflorescence (a fleshy stem covered in tiny flowers) often accompanied by a spathe (a petal- or leaf-like bract curving around the spadix). In monecious aroids, the female flowers are typically at the bottom of the spadix and the male flowers at the top. A number of different species of aroids are eaten around the world, including Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (elephant foot yam), Colocasia esculenta (kochu, taro, dasheen), Xanthosoma (cocoyam, tannia), Typhonium trilobatum and Monstera deliciosa (Mexican breadfruit). Usually the starchy corm is eaten, though leaves and flowers also have culinary uses.
