In the last few years, I have seen different Japanese curries at stores when I’m in Portland but never thought too much to get any. This week, I received a box from Japan that featured different Pokemon ramens that I had purchased but also got a box of Pokemon curry, a mild, and I’m thinking “well damn, I love curry, now I have to try more of this.”
I do not play PokemonGo nor was I really a Pokemon fan, other than the few shows I watched with my nephew when he was younger. Pokemon was very much his thing. Nonetheless, I like to try different things from Japan from time to time, usually the many flavors of Kit Kat or whatever goofy food-related things I may spot online and this time I wanted to get the curry and the ramen because of all the PokemonGo mayhem that has been happening in the last few months. On top of that, I ahd seen a photo of the inside of the ramen and it features little kamaboko slices done with Pikachu. As dorky and cutesy as that sounds, I had to have it. Result? The Pokemon soy ramen and the seafood ramen both taste like Cup (O’) Noodles, but half the size of a regular bowl.
However, I really wanted to try the curry and I must say, I was very impressed. It is instant curry and after opening the box, you can either boil the bag (like the old school boiling bags) and eat it up, or microwave it. Or you could just open it and pour the sauce on hot rice. I had my Pokemon curry with a small bit of leftover pot roast I had the night before and a scoop of rice. There was a slight bit of sweetness to it but it makes me want to try the spicier version, which comes packaged in a red box.
I did a small bit of research and there are tons of curry vending machines in Japan, done up by different companies made with a number of levels of heat (as in spiciness) or whatever you want. There is a blue curry, a “slime green” curry, and even a pink curry that is made from beets. Another curry is both blue and white, made to look like the frozen waters of Japan. Some of these are available from Amazon Japan while others can be found on websites like J-List and Oyatsucafe. However, I will be doing more research to find if there are other places I may be able to purchase these curries.
Because of this, I want to re-start my YouTube channel and start sampling some of these and posting them up there. We’ll see how that goes when I get a new curry.
