not about translation, but kurapika and leorio’s introductions are so GOOD. you learn so much about these characters in the span of just a few pages. honestly i think one of togashi’s strongest skills as a writer is how efficient he is at character building.
i love this scene. leorio yelling in the background because of something stupid while being ignored by kurapika, kurapika going on analytical tirade just from being asked a simple question, leorio and kurapika’s speech patterns being so fundamentally different… *chef’s kiss*
this is another minor change, but since it’s right before kurapika’s iconic line i figured i would call it out. in the captain’s third speech bubble he’s actually telling kurapika, “you’ll be dying a pointless death.”
this is another instance of changing something for no reason. this is what’s actually being said:
captain: why do you all want to become hunters?
leorio: who do you think you are asking that, it’s not like you’re an interviewer [for the hunter exam].
captain: just answer, it’s fine.
leorio: what did you just say?
oh interesting! that’s actually what i don’t like about it, haha. i think it’s weird dialogue for the captain to basically imply he’s a proctor for the exam and for leorio to adamantly be like NUH UH NO YOU’RE NOT in response. it’s just a weird exchange of dialogue to me.
leorio is pissed because kurapika isn’t addressing him as “leorio-san”, which could’ve easily been translated as “that’s MISTER leorio to you!” but instead for the english they just have kurapika completely butcher leorio’s name, which doesn’t make kurapika look rude so much as a complete ditz.
