#abolish landlords

LIVE

All helpful solutions but not one single ‘expert’ mentions putting an outright cap on people buying second homes or buy to let properties. Is it perfectly fine for Vincent working in finance already earning £100k to own 5 homes and rent them out? To exploit tenants for his personal gain? Buying properties that could have gone to people actually wanting to buy a fucking home?

A few months ago a new build block of reasonably priced apartments went up for sale near me. They were listed as INVESTMENT ONLY. There you have about 50 homes that could have gone to first time buyers or be used as social housing, but nope, lets only give them to some privileged twats who have the luxury of second home ownership. That shit should be illegal.

Want to know what the mortgage on my apartment is? £550. Want to know the rental price of a smaller apartment with one less bathroom in my building currently being advertised is? £800. My mortgage is fixed rate (and landlords’ might be too, I dunno) but rental prices in the area are on the up. What use is building more affordable housing if folks are struggling to get a deposit together because rent is so high? And people are being priced out of WHERE THEY GREW UP to second homes and holiday lets. But ya know… it’s perfectly ok, apparently we can just build new homes 50 miles away for people to live in.

About a quarter of our Tory MPs, as well as Boris Johnson himself, are landlords. They work for themselves. Sunak for example exploited legal loopholes so his wife didn’t have to pay taxes. The chances of anything being changed is extremely slim.

So yeah… the suggestions in this article are all valid but what use is it building affordable housing if landlords can still swoop in and buy it?
