A VILA ONDE EU NASCI

THE TOWN WHERE I WAS BORN
Let me describe, from beginning to end, the place where I spend part of my childhood and my youth. It starts like this: The village of indigo was behind the blue sea. At the back was a football field and a bar. It was always raining. The street was wide, with lots of sand. I knew everyone in the village, my mother, the tireless teller of beautiful stories whom I admired so much, my sister still remembers many of these things to this day, her name is Atija Sulubito Juma. I liked to contemplate the sea and swim to the seabed in blue waters the color of the sky. It’s a long time ago I visited this place, so there is only left to me these memories.

I started making photographs at Aziza Amade Ali’s house, a building known on Ilha de Moçambique as Clube Desportivo, in 2005. I was on Ilha preparing a documentary project about daily life in Moçambique and was fascinated by the derelict modernist building at the contra costa marginal of the island. My first pictures - and those taken by Aziza with a small 35mm disposable camera - where made that year. These first photographs where the start of what would become “Clube Desportivo”.

Currently “Clube Desportivo” is divided into 3 chapters: the original Clube Desportivo,Vamos para Casa (in progress) and Marangonha/Tamarind (in progress). It will be an ongoing project for the foreseeable future, even now the Desportivo building has gone…
