The Moment I Knew + All Too Well - Taylor swift

pamm-beesly:

something else that the conversation kept going back to was how taylor was very intent on making dylan’s character more than just the mustache twirling villain. she talked about how by the end he is the protagonist, on the outside looking in like how we all find ourselves at some point in our lives and how even though he’s treating his very young girlfriend terribly he is still charming and very gentle and sweet with her at times and it’s very clear that this was a really important detail for taylor to communicate and hearing her talk about it made me realize how important that is. it speaks to a couple of very integral things about toxic relationships and just humanity in general - one, that often these situations are not black and white, there’s various shades of gray and complexity and layers to these relationships and actions and two, that people who hurt us and do harmful and toxic things aren’t these inherently evil people…they’re people that are struggling and handling it poorly for probably a myriad of reasons. dylan hit the nail on the head when he said “he isn’t a monster, he’s a narcissistic egotistical child” which was a hilarious line but also very accurate!!! taylor didn’t go into this film with the intent to vilify anyone, she went into it wanting to depict human connection and the ways that it happens and falls apart. and she did it so so so well.

“I talked to my friends’ kids or just young people that I know and I’ll have a 12-year-old or a 13-year-old break down to me like, ‘He’s gaslighting right there! That’s psychological manipulation!’ To see her [Sink], she’s questioning whether she really is overreacting. And it gives me hope for future generations because if I was 19 or 18 watching that fight scene, I’d be like, ‘Oh man, he’s winning.’ When we screened it for the first time, we had people in the audience screaming out, ‘Gaslighter!’ I feel really good about the younger generation. Emotionally articulate. Gorgeous.”
