Juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron with Adult

Walking by the rushes we saw what we thought was a Green Heron literally leap in front of us, got the camera trained and started shooting. We call this type of meeting a “drawer check”. We also saw a Night-heron flying with this bird. A quick check of our handy bird manual and we decided it was a juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron.

American White Pelicans at Horns Rapid Dam. I wanted to show the power of water, and the beauty of the Pelicans so I shot at extremely slow shutter speed. D500, 300mm f/2.8 lens, shot at 1/50 sec, F/11, ISO 64. Out of 325 photographs, these are the only two photos that are even close to being in focus. Any hints on what I should have done?
