The new Bridgerton show runner confirmed in an interview that Colin doesn’t know Penelope likes him
Oh, but I love this so much!!! I’m SO happy if that’s true. Because, okay, listen, not too get too into it, but it makes SO much sense because show Colin seems like his primary conflict is being insecure. He’s out here with full blown imposter syndrome, frankly, so it makes a lot of sense. Of course he doesn’t know Penelope likes him. Of course he doesn’t! He’s just assuming she’s being nice because Penelope IS nice. She’s nice to his sister, she’s nice to his family.
She can’t possibly see HIM as being special or different. Pen? Pen who inspires him to look at himself in new light and in better ways? Pen who always asks about how he is and listens? That’s just Pen. She’d do that with anyone. He isn’t special. He’s just Colin.
That makes the line ‘That you care for me, that you’d never forsake me. I’m starting to see that, now’ that he says, (misremembering or completely misquoting what Marina said to him) so much more poignant, because it’s the pivotal point for him. And the 'you’re special to me’ dialogue in the dance!!!
I’m holding out hope they take the angle of BOTH of them needing assurance in S3 in their relationship because I feel like we really empathize with Penelope, particularly when she feels invisible and disregarded, but also it would be an amazing thing to empathize with Colin about, as well. I’m hoping we see MUTUAL pining. Penelope going 'He’ll never love me’ and Colin ALSO going 'She’ll never love me’ while they’re both experiencing the Yearning ™ I’m just so excited for how they’re gonna make their love story!
