Long time, no see!

It’s been a rough few months, so I’ve not had the heart to paint until recently. Plus I discovered that I needed glasses again so that’s been an adjustment.

You ever been away from an activity for so long, you feel like you’re no longer good at it? Then I looked with my New Eyes at my last few paintings and just **blech**

I remembered something I’d heard a super talented artist I follow say, when you’re not happy with your product, it’s bc your style and skill is evolving and your hands haven’t caught up. So….I started again and this time it’s already so much better. What are y'all struggling with?

Update time!

Fan art, this specific kind of fan art, is a different ball game. I’ve got to make all of this my own; Tanjiro, Yongguk, the composition. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and anyone who says differently is not being transparent.

I got started with Tanjiro as he’s drawn but started to feel not great about the deeply Japanese motifs on a Korean model. Why? History. So I opted to do some research and some tweaking and have ended up with something I feel comfortable with, that I’m excited about bringing to life.

I’ve been thinking too about how The Art Establishment polices art, acting like this or that isn’t really art. That’s bullshit, by the way. The next time someone says to you “fan art isn’t real art” ask them about the Renaissance. Whole time period, lifted up by Gate Keepers, full of Biblical fan art.

Now that I’ve made myself irritated, have a photo of Hoshi being cute. Let it soothe you

When my random number generator gave me that photo of Yongguk, I thought “But what if he was Tanjiro?”

To me, the energy is the same, everything Tanjiro does, I could see Yongguk doing. At least, that’s my perception of him anyway.

I finally had time to draw today, so I thought I’d try (again) to use the sketchbook before I worked on it in my computer. Somehow, today, my brain likes this method. I like to be flexible in my workflow, I think it matters more that it gets done, as opposed to doing it a specific way. See why math and I aren’t friends?

So I thought and stared and came up with what you see here, pretty basic Tanjiro stance. I’m hoping to be able to make some clothing adjustments as I finalize it.
