A further example from the 1855 set of reference photographs taken by Jean Louis Marie Eugène Durieu with Eugène Delacroix, depicting this muscular male model in a variety of poses.

A striking and wonderfully well-lit artist’s reference photograph of as-yet-unknown date and provenance : it appears to be authentically old (to my inexpert eye, at least) but I’ve been unable to find out any more about the origin - as always, additional information from more knowledgable readers would be gratefully welcomed!

A whole sheet of photographs taken in the studio of Louis Jean-Baptiste Igout, and published by A Calavas, between 1870 and 1880. Some further pages of these multiple-image artists’ reference can be found here.

From the studio of artist Jacques de Lalaing, taken during the 1880s or 1890s; this a little more practical pose, not so prettily and elegantly artistic as some of his reference photographs.

Further artists’ reference photographs from 1870s France, from the studio of Louis Jean-Baptiste Igout, in addition to those shared previously. The third here is my favourite of the set, as though one describes the features of some wondrous landscape while the other surveys the scene with eager admiration!

Thomas Eakins (American, 1844 - 1916) - Seated Nude Man (Duckett); Nude Model at Philadelphia Art Students’ League (c. 1886-92 (negative) printed later)

I’ve featured this photograph of Bill Duckett (and his ‘legs to die for’) once before, though a cropped and tattered print, this time we may see the whole image, untrimmed and unspoilt.

A reference photograph taken in the studio of French sculptor Pierre-Charles Simart, in 1856, just a year before he died. 

A sheet of male nudes for artists, photographed and published by Louis Jean-Baptiste Igout, circa 1870. We’ve seen several pages from M. Igout before, but none of these seem to be repeated images.

Looking a little bored, this sleepy-eyed yet endearingly sweet-faced model poses in the studio of Gustav Moreau, photographer Henri Rupp providing anatomical reference for a later painted scene. He does not look at all enthusiastic about his role in the process, as though this has been going on plenty long enough and he would rather be elsewhere now!

A further sheet of artists’ reference photographs by Louis Jean Baptiste Igout, circa 1880. At the time, an extremely thrifty way to obtain accurate anatomical reference for the human form; today a fascinating survival from the creative process, a glimpse behind the scenes.

This handsome bearded male nude poses with great poise and an impressively muscular physique, surely providing reference for a classically styled sketch or painting. I wonder what legendary hero or religious figure he became?
