A fascination 1880s/90s photograph from the studio of Belgian sculptor Jacques de Lalaing, a scene all too rarely seen, as an artist’s model poses again beside the part-finished sculpture his body provided the reference for. Note that his raised arm is tied in place, to relieve some of the strain of holding a pose for a lengthy period.

A much-appreciated donation from generous reader Yanni, here Maurice Deriaz poses in the studio of French artist Gustave-Claude-Étienne Courtois, who painted him in 1907, 1912 and 1913. He made a magnificent model for these works, his performances and impressive physique bringing him fame across Europe, displaying feats of strength and gymnastic skill, and becoming a champion Greco-Roman wrestler. Designed by architect William Flockhart in 1904 as a set of 6 purpose built artist studio flats
Among the artist residents were Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon who lived and worked there until 1923, Glyn Philpot, Vivian Forbes, James Pryde and F. Gayley Robinson.
The last two pictures are screenshots of the 1968 psychedelic film “Wonderwall” ( by director Joe Massot, starring Jane Birkin and Jack McGowran) in which Lansdowne House served as one of the film’s locations.
