Evelyne Brochu, spy in Paris

Le Journal de Montréal - February 28, 2019

The Quebec actress makes her French TV debut Thursday night in “Thanksgiving

For the biggest role of her career in France, Evelyne Brochu wears the clothes of a character she knows well: that of a spy.

Two years after the end of X Company on CBC , the Quebec actress is starring in Thanksgiving, a mini-series that Arte will air on Thursday night.

In an interview with LeJournal, the actress cannot hide her excitement. “It’s exciting!” she says on the phone. “I am very proud of this project.” A mini-series of three episodes written and directed by Nicolas Saada (Espion(s),Taj Mahal),Thanksgiving portrays a couple made up of an employee of the American intelligence services and a partner of a computer company (Grégoire Colin) who is about to sell out his own firm by selling a program that he develops.

Arte calls Thanksgiving a spy drama, but just forget Homeland andAlias. The series does not offer any action footage at all. “Nicolas said that it’s a series about the lies within the couple,” says Evelyne Brochu. “That’s what I found interesting: how the unsaid can afflict us.”.

“It was magical”

Evelyne Brochu got the role of Louise from a distance, after a video audition and a Skype meeting with Nicolas Saada. “It’s cool to know that it’s possible to do this today. It makes it easier for those who want to pursue a career abroad,” says the actress from Café de Flore,Orphan Black,MiradorandPolytechnique.

The filming of Thanksgiving took to Paris in November and December 2017. During this period, Evelyne Brochu rented an apartment in the 11th district which she found on Airbnb and was located a few minutes’ walks from the set. “It was magical,” she says. “This proximity, this immersive effect… It fed my character a lot. I lived differently, I spoke differently, I lived with different people… I got so wrapped up.”

The actress really liked the rhythm of the French shoots, which were much slower than in Quebec. “Their schedules are a little more ‘humane’. We had time to finish the scenes. And every lunchtime, we would sit down and discuss the scenes over a glass of wine!”

New mother

New mum since October, Evelyne Brochu has not promoted the series in France in recent weeks. She preferred to answer journalists’ questions in Montreal, so she could stay with her son.

“I wanted us to have our first months together,” she explains. “I have never been so present-moment. Je tripe à mort.”

Album to come

Evelyne Brochu is still working, however. With Félix Dyotte and Philippe Brault, she is refining her debut album of songs expected later this year. She is also preparing to shoot the third season of Trop in the spring. And until Saturday, she was part of the jury for the Gilles-Carle Award for Best First or Second Fiction Feature Film at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois.

“I watched the 12 films in selection, including Une colonie,Nous sommes GoldandMad Dog Labine,” she says. “C’est une cuvée écœurante! We make good cinema in Quebec.”
