Aug. 16, 2003: The Ravens’ 13-10 preseason win at Atlanta proves a nightmare for Michael Vick, the Falcons’ Pro Bowl quarterback. Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas tips Vick’s first pass, which is intercepted. Moments later, the 270-pound Thomas tackles the scrambling Vick, breaking his leg.
Aug. 15, 1996: The playoff-bound Orioles rout the Athletics, 18-5, in Oakland, hitting five home runs. Chris Hoiles (two), Rafael Palmeiro, Bobby Bonilla and Roberto Alomar connect for the Orioles, whose 194 homers is second best in the majors.
Aug, 17, 1972: In a steady drizzle, the Orioles lose, 6-1, to the Chicago White Sox before the smallest announced Memorial Stadium crowd (655) in the team’s modern history.
Aug. 17, 1963: In the second game of an NFL preseason doubleheader in Cleveland, Johnny Unitas throws touchdown passes to Jimmy Orr and Dick Bielski as the Colts defeat the Browns, 21-7, before an announced 83,218. In the first game, the New York Giants top the Detroit Lions, 27-21.
Aug. 17, 1960: The Orioles hit five home runs, a Memorial Stadium club record, but lose, 11-7, to the Washington Senators. Jim Gentile, Gus Triandos, Ron Hansen, Jackie Brandt and Al Pilarcik homer for Baltimore.
Aug. 20, 1953: Don Larsen strikes out 11 and Billy Hunter hits a home run as the St. Louis Browns defeat the International League Orioles, 8-2, before an announced 10,681 in an exhibition at the stadium. The Browns’ American League franchise moves to Baltimore for the 1954 season.
Aug. 14, 1949: Bill Brown, a junior at Morgan State, wins the 400- and 800-meter runs in an international track and field meet in Amsterdam. Brown, of Bel Air, will win a gold medal in the 1951 Pan American Games as a member of the U.S. 1,600-meter relay team.
Aug. 19, 1946: Nearly 20 ex-servicemen, many of whom played for Maryland before the war, are among the 103 football prospects as coach Clark Shaughnessy’s Terps begin practice in College Park.

Aug. 19, 1979: Jen Adams, Maryland lacrosse star and three-time National Player of the Year who led the Terps to four NCAA championships (1998-2001). Adams is now head coach at Loyola Maryland.
