Wood ducks are easily distinguished from the more common mallard ducks.  Male wood ducks are considered one of the prettiest waterfowl with their iridescent patterns, crisp white lines, bright beaks, and gracefully swooped head feathers.  In comparison, male mallards have grey-black bodies and  shiny green heads.  The females are slightly harder to tell apart as both have brown plumage.  However, the female wood duck also has an elegant white eyeline.
