Halle Bailey reclaiming the lead role of The Little Mermaid is much more than an acting performance. The announcement of this casting has shed light on the racism, terrifying stereotypes, and marginalization of Black people that continues to manifest in this country.
But the fact that we can now associate The Little Mermaid with a Black woman, whether some like it or not, is a beautiful, graceful step away from our ignorant society.
