I think I’ve finally realised a good response to transandrophobes who claim to want to de-gender things and say “why can’t you just be a masculine woman” to trans men.
It’s because we move through this world as men, no matter our gender presentation. Even if you removed all social stigmas levied at women tomorrow, and made it so that women could be as masculine as they like without hinderance- trans men would still not be women.
‘Masculine woman’ implies that you would move through the world as ‘women’. Which means if you’re, say, attracted to men, that you’d move through life as a straight woman. Trans men can’t and won’t conform to something we aren’t. If you forced a gay trans man to ‘just be a masculine woman’ he wouldn’t be able to move through life as he really is, a gay man.
I know this is garbled but does it make sense?
That like, even if the world was suddenly gender egalitarian trans men wouldn’t suddenly go ‘alright then’ and live as women. Fundamentally we are not women. No amount of ‘but what if the world was like this’ will change that.
If you removed my head and transplanted it on a genderless robot body, I’d still be a man who is attracted to men. Even if I did look like a ‘masculine woman’ (which many transmascs get misgendered as’ the illusion of appearance like a ‘masculine woman’ would not then negate the fact that I’m still a man. Even in a world where women’s appearances aren’t policed Trans men will still exist because we are a natural part of gender diversity.
If you took a cis man’s head and put it on a woman’s body, he’d still be a man, even if he looked like a ‘masculine woman’. Such is the situation many trans men find ourselves in. We wouldn’t magically not be men if there was more freedom for women to be masculine. The end result is women as a whole being freer, but there would be no affect on trans men since well, we’re not women.
I had this thought just now so it does need more work- but damn I wish there was a concise way to put this.
Also like, nonbinary people like myself, who just wants to destroy stigmas and gender roles, and shit like that, so anyone can identify how they want regardless of identity, is no way shape or form wanting to strip people of their identities.
It’s simply erasure to want trans men to just be “masculine women”, it’s straight up oppression to misgender and erase trans men and transmasc people.
That’s why it’s fucked up, it’s straight up erasing someone’s identity. And that is inherently transphobic to do. And their views on abolishing gender is 100% not in good faith and not the same as nonbinary people discussing gender abolition. They want to eradicate it in order to control people and their bodies, and we want to destroy set categories(the gender binary) so that people have freedom to identify however they choose.
So it will never be a positive thing and if they say that shit to you, ask them if they believe women should have autonomy over their bodies, why tell someone like you that you need to change just because they told you to? It throws the core feminist arguments back in their face and reveals their true motives.
