I know that Izzy and Edward’s backstory is all questions and subtext and wildly different reads, but I still end up baffled by some takes.

How are you as a meta writer going to - in the span of like 2 paragraphs! - say Edward canonically does not consider Izzy a friend due to the bathtub scene, expand on the bathtub line to say Edward considers no one a friend, and then immediately pivot to how Izzy can’t be that close to Edward anyway because Calico Jack is an example of someone “actually” being a friend of sorts from Edward’s past, and he seems closer to Edward than Izzy does (despite not being kept around in any meaningful way, unlike Izzy???).

Like, yeah, no shit Jack is a friend of sorts… if by that you just mean a friend. Who Edward and Stede acknowledge as such. (And yeah, Jack and possibly past-Edward also subscribe to “pirates don’t have friends” but that’s terminology, not a toggleable ability to never form bonds. He is in every affect a friend, if a shit one.) Which… Edward having a long-established friend kind of proves that he wasn’t being totally honest before???

I know the bathtub scene is very touching for Blackbonnet reasons, but I assure you it is still touching when we acknowledge Edward is Kind Of Melodramatic. Maybe you have a shaky case that he wouldn’t call Izzy his friend because he’s internalized that pirates don’t use that word, but that line certainly doesn’t prove Edward has never felt or leaned on friendship once in 20+ years, including with the guy he chose to be his second in command.
