how it actually went: remove old one, try two different size threads. neither one fits. get one thread stuck inside new gear knob, accidentally drop the other one into a hole in the centre console, never to be seen again. give up and put old scratched gear knob back on, retire from ordinary life and find a new home in the forest where cars are unnecessary and everything is peaceful
